Athleisure – a crowbarring of the words athletic and leisure, that has been making the rounds on runways for the last decade and has no signs of slowing down.

An attitude, a mindset and a statement that defies the counter-culture of high fashion, the athleisure lifestyle of the 90s has made its comeback with a vengeance. But where did it all begin?

As the faces of fashion look at the next generation of design, one recurring theme has become prevalent – while we want to look good in what we’re wearing, we also need to feel good in what we’re wearing. Queue the era of star studded celebrity sportswear.

From Beyonce’s Ivy Park to Kanye West’s Yeezy, there’s been no shortage of star thoroughfare in facilitating a new trend in athleisure.

That in turn has filtered onto the streets – not only making it acceptable to embrace athleisure but making it desirable. From wearing your tracksuit with heels, long bike shorts to a concert or basketball shoes off the courts, it is clear that the rise of athleisure has blurred the boundaries in what was possible for functional high fashion looks.

Here’s the athleisure looks we’ve got our eyes on this season:
